RESUME
The following is a resume of my career to-date and my ambitions for the future.
My interest in sports, in particular athletics, began at a very early age during which I was lucky enough to represent my school (Beal high school) and also the Borough of Redbridge in various athletic events at county championship level.
In 1982, at the age of 10, I was introduced to Karate and, although I still continued with athletics, I knew that Karate would become my primary interest. I used to train up to five nights a week and competed in various competitions all over the United Kingdom. At that time it was a rule that girls under the age of 18 were not allowed to compete with each other in national events. Consequently I was forced to compete against young men, who, in many instances were 2 or 3 years older than myself. Although this proved to be very challenging, I feel that the experience tested and subsequently improved my performance ability enormously. This rule has now been relaxed and girls are allowed to compete with one another at all levels of competition.
PATRICIA DUGGIN 3RD DAN BLACK BELT
WORLD & EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION
At 15, I began competing at national level all over the United Kingdom, and eventually the World. Since then my career has gone from strength to strength, having won many titles and trophies, all of which I am very proud. At the age of 16, I achieved every student’s ambition and attained my Black Belt.

The next few years were hectic. I spent 3 years at Waltham Forest College studying for a BTEC course in Leisure & Recreation studies. This, combined with training, teaching and competing kept me fully occupied!
My first major individual success was at the age of 16 when I won GOLD at the European Wado Ryu Open Championships in Paris in 1988. This was followed in 1990 with a win in the Ladies middleweight, at the Czech Open, which I converted to the Ladies Heavyweight Title in 1991. I retained the title in 1992 when I also won the English Ladies Team event in the Wado-Ryu Championships, the Heavyweight title and the Ladies Individual Heavyweight title at the British Championships in Sheffield. Later that same year I was selected for the Great Britain Squad to compete at the World Championships in Spain where I became the Ladies Team World Champion.
Since then I have been a permanent member of the England and Great Britain squads - competing and winning medals all over the world including Czechoslovakia, Malaysia, Philippines Finland, France, Germany, Holland and Spain and many more.
The highlight of my career to-date is becoming a double World Champion at the World Championships in South Africa in November 1996. I represented Great Britain in the Ladies Individual Heavyweight and Ladies Team event and won 2 GOLD medals.
I am only the 3rd Woman in history to achieve this.

WORLD & EUROPEAN INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION
Presently, I teach Karate to adults and juniors at Jubilee Hall in Covent Garden, Coopersale Sports Centre in Essex, Wansted Leisure Centre, and at Sadlers Sport Centre in Islington.
Teaching children is very rewarding but can also be extremely challenging. Encouraging them to maintain concentration and control can often be difficult but usually persistence pays off! I always try to be firm but fair and I get tremendous satisfaction from seeing them progress between grades, developing new skills and adopting a positive attitude towards the sport and competition in general.
In addition to Karate, I also teach self-defence for women.
My ultimate goal is for Karate to be recognised as an Olympic sport so that I might have the opportunity to represent my country.
I have appeared on television programs such as the Big Breakfast, Under the Moon, Your Shout, Saturday Night National Lottery Show, and NewsRoom Southeast.
I have also done a number of radio interviews as well as interviews with national papers such as the Daily Mail, Observer, Independent and magazines that include Cosmopolitan and New Woman.
In recognition of the achievements I have made in karate I have recently been invited to become a participant in the Sporting Ambassadors Scheme funded by the English Sports Council and supported by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE). Only successful and celebrated sportsmen and women are invited to join the scheme. My participation will enable me to make a positive contribution towards fulfilling the many sporting needs of our young people. As a Sporting Ambassador I will visit schools and other youth organizations to inspire young people about the benefits of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. I receive no payment for my involvement in the scheme.
